Born in Moscow in 1945, lives and works in Moscow Joseph Backstein is the Commissioner of the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary art and artistic director of the institute of Contemporary art, Moscow. he holds a PhD in Sociology of art and Culture from the institute of Sociology at the USSR academy of Sciences. his achievements have brought him numerous awards such as an honorary doctorate from Gothenburg University, Sweden. in 2008, he was a member of the doCUMenTa (13) selection committee nominating the curators. Backstein has been a corresponding member of the Russian academy of arts since 2007 and a member of the international association of art Critics (aiCa) since 1995.
