How to tell a structure? How to narrate this thing that is both pervasive and invisible, both determined and determining, both repressive and enabling? With Sohrab Shahid-Saless’ film In der Fremde, the structure has clear contours: It designates the way in which exploitation, inequality and dehumanization is being maintained on an everyday basis. As much as a structure cannot be shown directly, it can be rendered visible through a series of detours: No plot but environments, no psychology but frames, no catharsis but mechanical repetition.
