More Arrow

„Urchin Compass“ brings together Jochen Lempert, Nobuko Tsuchiya and Moe Yoshida: a photographer, a sculptor and an artist working with sculpture, drawing and performance, respectively. Their dialogue in the context of the exhibition is intuitive and visual rather than conceptual, but the question of the relationship between human and non-human life forms is a common ground for all three, as is their approach to it, that challenges our anthropocentric assumptions.

The black and white photographs that Lempert has been taking for more than thirty years, informed by his training as a biologist, explore the sphere of non-human life in unexpected, surprising, deeply poetic ways; but they also reflect on the nature of photography itself (especially analog photography) as an image and a physical object, a document and a formal composition. Nobuko Tsuchiya’s fragile assemblages of found objects and spare parts evoke hybrids – sometimes disturbing, sometimes fairy-tale-like – between organic and technological, animal and vegetal, human and non-human, shedding light on what is already the nature of the world we inhabit and of our own bodies. Moe Yoshida’s sculptures of papier-mâché, branches, wire, and fabric, slender like Giacometti figures, are poised between animal, vegetal, humanoid. Equipped with functioning joints and wands to hold, they can be animated and even made to walk, sparking actions in which sculpture turns into an extension, and even a full-fledged doppelgänger, of the body of the performer.
