John Peter Nilsson was appointed director of the Moderna Museet Malmö, Sweden, in 2012, where he had worked as a curator since 2004. He was editor-in-chief for siksi ‒ The Nordic Art Review from 1996 to 1999 and for nu: The Nordic Art Review from 1999 to 2002. Besides being a freelance art critic for the Swedish daily Aftonbladet from 1986 to 2004, John Peter Nilsson also organized several exhibitions as an independent curator; he was curator for The Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 1999. Apart from numerous smaller exhibitions, lectures, and seminars at the Moderna Museet, he curated The Moderna Exhibition (2006), a survey of Swedish contemporary art; Olle Baertling – A Modern Classic (2007), which also toured to The Chianti Foundation in Marfa, Texas (2008); Dalí Dalí featuring Francesco Vezzoli (2009), and Klara Lidén (2011). He recently curated the show THE SUPERSURREALISM (2012) with works inspired by surrealist thoughts from 1580 until today at the Moderna Museet Malmö and the international group show Lies about painting (2013) that reflects upon the condition of painting in the twenty-first century.
