João Laia ist seit 2024 Künstlerischer Direktor des Contemporary Art Department of the Municipality of Porto. Von 2019 bis 2024 war er Chefkurator am Kiasma – National Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.
Gemeinsam mit Valentinas Klimašauskas kuratierte er den litauischen Nationalpavillon auf der 60. Biennale von Venedig (2024) sowie die 14. Baltische Triennale im CAC in Vilnius (2021). Darüber hinaus kuratierte Laia unter anderem die 12. Göteborg-Biennale (2023) und war Co-Kurator der 18. und 19. Ausgabe von Videobrasil in São Paulo (2015–17).
